A Drug Rehabilitation Center in Kendari City with A Humanistic Architectural Approach

Abstract

Drug abuse remains a significant social and public health issue that requires comprehensive rehabilitation facilities capable of supporting physical, psychological, and social recovery processes. In Kendari City, the availability of rehabilitation facilities that provide supportive, comfortable, and recovery-oriented environments remains a challenge. Architectural design plays an important role in creating spaces that promote healing, emotional stability, privacy, and social interaction for individuals undergoing rehabilitation. This research aimed to formulate the design concept of a Drug Rehabilitation Center in Kendari City using a humanistic architectural approach that prioritizes user needs, psychological comfort, and a supportive healing environment.This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through literature reviews, field observations, site analysis, and comparative studies of similar rehabilitation facilities. The collected data were analyzed to identify spatial requirements, site responses, circulation patterns, environmental considerations, and architectural strategies based on humanistic design principles. The design process considered aspects such as natural lighting, ventilation, green spaces, privacy, accessibility, and the creation of therapeutic environments that support rehabilitation activities.The design results indicated that the application of a humanistic architectural approach could be realized through the integration of user-centered spatial planning, natural environmental elements, and supportive communal areas. The proposed rehabilitation center was designed to accommodate medical services, counseling activities, therapy programs, social interaction, and vocational development within a comfortable and dignified environment. The design concept emphasized a balance between functional requirements and psychological considerations to support the recovery process of rehabilitation users.This research contributes to architectural development by providing a contextual design framework for rehabilitation facilities that emphasize human well-being and recovery. The proposed Drug Rehabilitation Center in Kendari City is expected to serve as a supportive healing environment that strengthens rehabilitation services while promoting social reintegration and improving the quality of life of individuals recovering from drug dependence.
